Mike's research involves the making of a series of multimodal works, developed in collaboration with a small pool of professional musicians. The aim is to provide opportunties to flexibly collaborate in the co-authoring of semi-improvised music performances.
The prioritisation of the music over the visuals (the visuals existing to provide a focal point for performers expressive and gestural responses, and for audience connective engagement) confronts the accepted view in the commercial film industry: that music exists to serve the images. The inverting of the dynamic empowers the instrumentalist, inviting them to engage with the images and their ensemble collaborators as agents of their own expression.
